Who is building ramps for black people?
I sit with a loss of words. I see what’s happening on the news, what happened to George Floyd and to see all the injustice in the world that are still faced by black people.
I look at other diversities such as myself, somebody that’s confined to a power wheelchair, and I had to spend a long time learning to speak. I’ve had privilege enough where I’ve had society build me ramps so I can enter buildings. They built elevators to floors I couldn’t climb. They created transportation so I can get to where I need to. The same groups of people that have helped enable me have put walls in front of others.
I have close friends that are black. My one black friend who’s like my little brother has supported me to enable me to accomplish so much. Now I’m here to lend my voice to support the black community. I have friends with black children that are going to be entering the world and you hope it’s going to be a better world than generations before them.
Sadly, I thought we were further than we actually are. In these last few days I have witnessed we are not. We have to build metaphorical ramps for all races, gender, and sexuality. I think all diversities need to represent a united front for inclusion to truly happen. I don’t just represent people with disabilities. I represent people that all deserve equality. I’m in full support. I don’t know what to say but maybe this is a start. So help me support people who are victims of prejudice and inequality. Speak up. Stand up. Roll up. Do what you can to be the voice for change.
We all have a part to play into this, regardless of our privilege, regardless of our ability, regardless of our age. Let’s make sure we interact and do all the little things that happen and justly every day to make sure there’s fairness going forward for everyone.
Equally needs to be accessible for all. I’m here to build a ramp for all!
